Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Anubhavam · The Thousand Names
Naama 284-290: The Lord who is the medicine for the disease of samsara
अमृतांशूद्भवो भानुः शशबिन्दुस्सुरेश्वरः ।
औषधं जगतस्सेतुः सत्यधर्मपराक्रमः ॥ ३१ ॥
amṛtāṃśūdbhavō bhānuḥ śaśabindussurēśvaraḥ |
auṣadhaṃ jagatassētuḥ satyadharmaparākramaḥ || 31 ||
284. amṛtāṃśūdbhavaḥ · अमृतांशूद्भवः
The one from whose mind the moon was born. The moon, whose nectar-like rays nourish the plants and bring the dead back to life, acquired these qualities only because of its contact with the Lord.
(oṃ) amṛtāṃśūdbhavāya namaḥ
The Purusha Suktham says, "The moon was born out of the mind of the Mahapurusha."
285. bhānuḥ · भानुः
The one whose effulgence is such that even the thousand-rayed sun shines only by acquiring a part of it.
(oṃ) bhānavē namaḥ
The Mundaka Upanishad says, "When He shines, everything shines after Him; by His light, all this is illumined" (tamēva bhāntamanubhāti sarvaṃ tasya bhāsā sarvamidaṃ vibhāti). The light of the sun is only a tiny fraction of His light.
286. śaśabinduḥ · शशबिन्दुः
The one who disowns those who go in the wrong path.
(oṃ) śaśabindavē namaḥ
Sri Bhattar derives this naama from the root śaśa, "to swerve from the right path", and bidi, "to disown". The Lord disowns those who wilfully turn away from the right path. The next naama tells us the opposite: He is the Lord of those who follow the straight path.
287. surēśvaraḥ · सुरेश्वरः
The one who is the Lord of those who follow the straight and righteous path.
(oṃ) surēśvarāya namaḥ
It is said, "Whatever is crooked leads to death, and whatever is straight leads to the attainment of Brahman."
The word sura can be understood as "one who brings what is good" (su, good, and rā, to give). The Lord is the master of all those who do good in abundance.
288. auṣadham · औषधम्
The one who is the medicine that removes the great poison of samsara.
(oṃ) auṣadhāya namaḥ
It is said, "O Bhagavan! You alone are the remedy for the disease of samsara, and this remedy can be obtained only at the high price of concentrating the mind on You."
289. jagatassētuḥ · जगतस्सेतुः
The one who is the barrier that keeps the good and the bad from mixing with each other, just as a dam keeps the waters from flowing over.
(oṃ) jagatassētavē namaḥ
Because of Him, no one gets the fruit of an action they did not perform, and no one is denied the fruit of an action they did perform. Just as a calf recognises and reaches its own mother among a thousand cows, the fruit of an action reaches the very person who performed it.
290. satyadharmaparākramaḥ · सत्यधर्मपराक्रमः
The one whose auspicious qualities (dharma) and valorous deeds (parākrama) are always true and never in vain.
(oṃ) satyadharmaparākramāya namaḥ
Arjuna says in the Bhagavad Gita, "O Krishna! I consider all that You tell me to be true."
