Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Anubhavam · The Thousand Names

Naama 272-283: The Vishwaroopam (Cosmic Form) of the Lord

272. naikarūpaḥ · नैकरूपः

The one who has countless forms, as was seen by Arjuna in the Vishwaroopam.

(oṃ) naikarūpāya namaḥ

Arjuna says in the Bhagavad Gita, "I see You everywhere with Your endless forms."

273. bṛhadrūpaḥ · बृहद्रूपः

The one each of whose forms is so immense that it fills the space between the earth and the heavens and all the directions.

(oṃ) bṛhadrūpāya namaḥ

Sri Bhattar quotes the Gita: "By You alone is the space between heaven and earth, and all the directions, pervaded" (dyāvāpṛthivyōridamantaraṃ hi vyāptaṃ tvayaikēna diśaśca sarvāḥ).

274. śipiviṣṭaḥ · शिपिविष्टः

The one who has entered into and pervades the rays of light.

(oṃ) śipiviṣṭāya namaḥ

In the Udyoga Parva, it is said that the Lord enters the pores of the body like the rays of the sun. Arjuna also says in the Gita, "Your powerful rays fill the whole universe and are burning it."

275. prakāśanaḥ · प्रकाशनः

The one who shows His celestial form to those, like Arjuna, who long to see it.

(oṃ) prakāśanāya namaḥ

Lord Krishna told Arjuna, "I shall give you a divine eye. See My sovereign power." He also said, "This form of Mine that you have seen is very difficult to see."

ओजस्तेजो द्युतिधरः प्रकाशात्मा प्रतापनः ।

ऋद्धस्स्पष्टाक्षरो मन्त्रः चन्द्रांशुर्भास्करद्युतिः ॥ ३० ॥

ōjastējō dyutidharaḥ prakāśātmā pratāpanaḥ |

ṛddhasspaṣṭākṣarō mantraḥ candrāṃśurbhāskaradyutiḥ || 30 ||

276. ōjastējōdyutidharaḥ · ओजस्तेजोद्युतिधरः

The one who is endowed with strength (ōjas), the power to overcome His enemies (tējas), and brilliance (dyuti).

(oṃ) ōjastējōdyutidharāya namaḥ

Sanjaya says in the Bhagavad Gita, "If the effulgence of a thousand suns were to rise at once in the sky, it would be somewhat like the splendour of that Mighty One." Arjuna, too, says that just as moths rush into a blazing fire to their own destruction, the enemies rush into the Lord's mouth.

277. prakāśātmā · प्रकाशात्मा

The one whose greatness is so evident that it is known even to the ignorant.

(oṃ) prakāśātmanē namaḥ

Even Dhritarashtra, who was blind both in his eyes and in his mind, recognised this when he said, "O Lotus-eyed Lord! You are the master of the entire universe. Therefore, You should take pity on me, O Chief of the Yadavas!"

278. pratāpanaḥ · प्रतापनः

The one who scorches His enemies with His fierce rays.

(oṃ) pratāpanāya namaḥ

Sri Bhattar explains this naama in the context of the Gita, where Arjuna, overwhelmed by the Vishwaroopam, says, "Your fierce rays, filling the whole world with their brilliance, are burning it, O Vishnu" (tējōbhirāpūrya jagatsamagraṃ bhāsastavōgrāḥ pratapanti viṣṇō). He saw the warriors of the Kaurava army rushing into the Lord's fiery mouths and being scorched.

279. ṛddhaḥ · ऋद्धः

The one who is full and magnificent, like the ocean on a full-moon day whose rising waves submerge even the shore.

(oṃ) ṛddhāya namaḥ

Sri Bhattar compares the Lord to the ocean on a full-moon day, whose rising waves submerge even the shore. In the Udyoga Parva it is said, "Then that foremost person among all men spoke again, with words that were divine, wonderful, and magnificent." The Lord is full in every respect, in His qualities, His knowledge, His detachment, and His wealth.

280. spaṣṭākṣaraḥ · स्पष्टाक्षरः

The one whose magnificence has made clear the letters and words of the Vedas, which speak of Him alone.

(oṃ) spaṣṭākṣarāya namaḥ

Sri Bhattar explains that through the letters of the Vedas, which speak only of Him, He has revealed Himself very clearly. The Gita also says, "Whoever leaves the body uttering the one syllable OM, which is Brahman, and remembering Me, attains the supreme goal" (ōmityēkākṣaraṃ brahma vyāharan māmanusmaran).

281. mantraḥ · मन्त्रः

The one who protects those who meditate upon Him.

(oṃ) mantrāya namaḥ

In the Varaha Charama Shloka, the Lord promises, "When a man, while his mind is clear and his body is healthy, meditates on Me as the one who has the world as My body and who is never born due to karma, then, when he lies like a log of wood or a stone in his dying moments, I think of him and lead him to the Supreme Abode." Such is the protection that the Lord gives to those who think of Him.

282. candrāṃśuḥ · चन्द्रांशुः

The one whose cool rays, like those of the moon, dispel the distress of those who meditate upon Him and fill them with joy.

(oṃ) candrāṃśavē namaḥ

When the sages in the forest saw Lord Rama, they felt as though they were looking at the rising moon.

283. bhāskaradyutiḥ · भास्करद्युतिः

The one whose brilliance, like that of the sun, easily throws all others into the shade and strikes terror into the hearts of His enemies.

(oṃ) bhāskaradyutayē namaḥ

In the Gita, Arjuna says, "The frightened Rakshasas flee in all directions." Thus, the very same Lord who is as cool as the moon to His devotees is as fierce as the sun to the wicked.
