Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Anubhavam · Appendix: Your Birth Star

Visakha (विशाखा)

Visakha covers verses 61 to 64 of the stotram, one for each of its four padas.

Pada 1 · Verse 61

सुधन्वा खण्डपरशुर्दारुणो द्रविणप्रदः ।

दिविस्पृक्सर्वदृग्व्यासो वाचस्पतिरयोनिजः ॥ ६१ ॥

sudhanvā khaṇḍaparaśurdāruṇō draviṇapradaḥ |

divispṛksarvadṛgvyāsō vācaspatirayōnijaḥ || 61 ||

With His splendid bow He ended the fight over the nectar, and He holds the broken axe, splitting the enemies of His devotees, outer and inner. As Vyasa, He gave the world the wealth of the shastras, saw the whole truth, divided the Veda into four, and composed the Mahabharata. He was not born from a womb.

Pada 2 · Verse 62

त्रिसामा सामगः साम निर्वाणं भेषजं भिषक् ।

सन्न्यासकृच्छमः शान्तो निष्ठा शान्तिः परायणम् ॥ ६२ ॥

trisāmā sāmagaḥ sāma nirvāṇaṃ bhēṣajaṃ bhiṣak |

sannyāsakṛcchamaḥ śāntō niṣṭhā śāntiḥ parāyaṇam || 62 ||

He is praised by the three great Sama chants and sings the Sama Himself. He destroys the sins of those who sing of Him and brings them to bliss. He is the only remedy for samsara and the physician who cures it through the Gita and the Upanishads. He frees those who act without desire for fruits, teaches control of the mind, is ever tranquil, the object of meditation and its peace, and gives the highest devotion.

Pada 3 · Verse 63

शुभाङ्गः शान्तिदः स्रष्टा कुमुदः कुवलेशयः ।

गोहितो गोपतिर्गोप्ता वृषभाक्षो वृषप्रियः ॥ ६३ ॥

śubhāṅgaḥ śāntidaḥ sraṣṭā kumudaḥ kuvalēśayaḥ |

gōhitō gōpatirgōptā vṛṣabhākṣō vṛṣapriyaḥ || 63 ||

He gives His devotees the eight limbs of yoga and lasting peace in the realisation of Himself. To those who wish to stay in samsara, He gives bodies according to their karma, and He delights in their enjoyment. He controls the souls who think they are their own masters, governs prakruti and Swarga, dispenses the fruits of karma, is the axle of the wheel of samsara, and is pleased by both kinds of dharma.

Pada 4 · Verse 64

अनिवर्ती निवृत्तात्मा सङ्क्षेप्ता क्षेमकृच्छिवः ।

श्रीवत्सवक्षाः श्रीवासः श्रीपतिः श्रीमतां वरः ॥ ६४ ॥

anivartī nivṛttātmā saṅkṣēptā kṣēmakṛcchivaḥ |

śrīvatsavakṣāḥ śrīvāsaḥ śrīpatiḥ śrīmatāṃ varaḥ || 64 ||

He lets those attached to worldly dharma continue to enjoy its fruits, and is the very soul of those who renounce. He limits the knowledge of the first and removes the obstacles of the second, doing good to all. On His chest is the Srivatsa, sign of His good fortune. He is the abode of Sri Mahalakshmi, Her eternal consort, and the best of those She blesses.
