Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Anubhavam · Appendix: Your Birth Star

Purva Phalguni (पूर्वफल्गुनी)

Purva Phalguni covers verses 41 to 44 of the stotram, one for each of its four padas.

Pada 1 · Verse 41

उद्भवः क्षोभणो देवः श्रीगर्भः परमेश्वरः ।

करणं कारणं कर्ता विकर्ता गहनो गुहः ॥ ४१ ॥

udbhavaḥ kṣōbhaṇō dēvaḥ śrīgarbhaḥ paramēśvaraḥ |

karaṇaṃ kāraṇaṃ kartā vikartā gahanō guhaḥ || 41 ||

Having let Yasoda bind Him, He cuts the bonds of samsara for those who meditate on Him. At creation, He stirs prakruti and plays with the souls bound in it, delighting Sri Mahalakshmi in this sport. He is the means to reach Him and the force behind every act. He feels the joys and sorrows of all beings as His own, a mystery beyond understanding, and so He saves all.

Pada 2 · Verse 42

व्यवसायो व्यवस्थानः संस्थानः स्थानदो ध्रुवः ।

परर्द्धिः परमस्पष्टः तुष्टः पुष्टः शुभेक्षणः ॥ ४२ ॥

vyavasāyō vyavasthānaḥ saṃsthānaḥ sthānadō dhruvaḥ |

pararddhiḥ paramaspaṣṭaḥ tuṣṭaḥ puṣṭaḥ śubhēkṣaṇaḥ || 42 ||

The circle of the planets is fastened to Him, and time rests in Him. In Him all things find their end, and He alone gives the Supreme Abode, as He gave Dhruva a lasting place in the heavens. As Rama, His auspicious qualities shine plainly. He was happier as Dasaratha's son, within everyone's reach, than in His supreme lordship. His lotus eyes reveal both His greatness and His love.

Pada 3 · Verse 43

रामो विरामो विरतो मार्गो नेयो नयोऽनयः ।

वीरश्शक्तिमतां श्रेष्ठो धर्मो धर्मविदुत्तमः ॥ ४३ ॥

rāmō virāmō viratō mārgō nēyō nayō’nayaḥ |

vīraśśaktimatāṃ śrēṣṭhō dharmō dharmaviduttamaḥ || 43 ||

As Rama, all beings delight in Him, and before Him the boon-givers, the boon-holders like Ravana, and the boons themselves lose their power. He had no attachment to kingship. He willingly followed His friends and devotees, drew all to Himself, and could not be led away by the hostile. Terror to the rakshasas, greatest of the powerful, He is dharma itself, and the sages came to Him to learn it.

Pada 4 · Verse 44

वैकुण्ठः पुरुषः प्राणः प्राणदः प्रणमः पृथुः ।

हिरण्यगर्भश्शत्रुघ्नो व्याप्तो वायुरधोक्षजः ॥ ४४ ॥

vaikuṇṭhaḥ puruṣaḥ prāṇaḥ prāṇadaḥ praṇamaḥ pṛthuḥ |

hiraṇyagarbhaśśatrughnō vyāptō vāyuradhōkṣajaḥ || 44 ||

He brings souls together with Himself by removing every obstacle. He purifies all and is the life of all: when He left Ayodhya, even its trees withered. His charm makes all bow before Him, and His fame reaches everywhere. He dwells like hidden gold in the hearts of those who meditate on Him, subdues the senses with arrows of wisdom, loves all equally, goes to His devotees Himself, and never grows less however much He is enjoyed.
