Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Anubhavam · Appendix: Your Birth Star

Makha (मघा)

Makha covers verses 37 to 40 of the stotram, one for each of its four padas.

Pada 1 · Verse 37

अशोकस्तारणस्तारः शूरः शौरिर्जनेश्वरः ।

अनुकूलः शतावर्तः पद्मी पद्मनिभेक्षणः ॥ ३७ ॥

aśōkastāraṇastāraḥ śūraḥ śaurirjanēśvaraḥ |

anukūlaḥ śatāvartaḥ padmī padmanibhēkṣaṇaḥ || 37 ||

He removes the troubles that arise within us and those caused by other beings, and carries us across the ocean of samsara. He is valiant, born in the line of Soora, and the Lord of all people. Yet He never lets His greatness stand in the way of His devotees, keeping His riches within bounds. He holds a lotus, and His lotus-like glances remove their afflictions.

Pada 2 · Verse 38

पद्मनाभोऽरविन्दाक्षः पद्मगर्भः शरीरभृत् ।

महर्द्धिर्ऋद्धो वृद्धात्मा महाक्षो गरुडध्वजः ॥ ३८ ॥

padmanābhō’ravindākṣaḥ padmagarbhaḥ śarīrabhṛt |

maharddhirṛddhō vṛddhātmā mahākṣō garuḍadhvajaḥ || 38 ||

He has a lotus navel and lovely lotus eyes, and is meditated upon in the lotus of the heart. His enchanting body nourishes those who meditate on Him. His riches are boundless, and He counts Himself prosperous only when His devotees prosper. His nature is greater than even His qualities. Garuda, the embodiment of the Vedas, is His vehicle and His banner.

Pada 3 · Verse 39

अतुलः शरभो भीमः समयज्ञो हविर्हरिः ।

सर्वलक्षणलक्षण्यो लक्ष्मीवान् समितिञ्जयः ॥ ३९ ॥

atulaḥ śarabhō bhīmaḥ samayajñō havirhariḥ |

sarvalakṣaṇalakṣaṇyō lakṣmīvān samitiñjayaḥ || 39 ||

He has no equal, destroys those who cross the bounds of dharma, and all fear to transgress before Him. He knows the order of all things and the right time to give Himself to His devotees, removing their obstacles. He bears every mark of the Supreme, above all Sri Mahalakshmi's embrace, is ever with Her, and wins over all souls.

Pada 4 · Verse 40

विक्षरो रोहितो मार्गो हेतुर्दामोदरः सहः ।

महीधरो महाभागो वेगवानमिताशनः ॥ ४० ॥

vikṣarō rōhitō mārgō hēturdāmōdaraḥ sahaḥ |

mahīdharō mahābhāgō vēgavānamitāśanaḥ || 40 ||

His love for His devotees never wanes, and His complexion is the red of a lotus. He is sought by all and fulfils their desires. As Krishna, He let Yasoda tie Him with a rope and bore her scolding patiently, though He holds all the worlds within. He removed the earth's burden, was chosen by Neela Devi, Rukmini and others, showed His power even as a child, and ate all the food prepared for Indra.
