Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Anubhavam · Appendix: Your Birth Star

Bharani (भरणी)

Bharani covers verses 5 to 8 of the stotram, one for each of its four padas.

Pada 1 · Verse 5

स्वयंभूः शम्भुरादित्यः पुष्कराक्षो महास्वनः ।

अनादिनिधनो धाता विधाता धातुरुत्तमः ॥ ५ ॥

svayaṃbhūḥ śambhurādityaḥ puṣkarākṣō mahāsvanaḥ |

anādinidhanō dhātā vidhātā dhāturuttamaḥ || 5 ||

He takes bodies of His own free will for His devotees, and His beauty brings joy to all who see Him. He sustains the sun, has eyes like a fresh lotus, and the Vedas are His voice. He has neither beginning nor end. As Aniruddha, He places the seed of creation, protects it until Brahma is born, and stands far above Brahma.

Pada 2 · Verse 6

अप्रमेयो हृषीकेशः पद्मनाभोऽमरप्रभुः ।

विश्वकर्मा मनुस्त्वष्टा स्थविष्ठः स्थविरो ध्रुवः ॥ ६ ॥

apramēyō hṛṣīkēśaḥ padmanābhō’maraprabhuḥ |

viśvakarmā manustvaṣṭā sthaviṣṭhaḥ sthavirō dhruvaḥ || 6 ||

He is beyond the reach of reasoning and controls all our senses. From His navel rises the lotus that bears Brahma, and He directs all the devas in their duties. He creates and sustains the world by a mere thought, shapes every form and name, and is vast, ancient and unchanging through all of time.

Pada 3 · Verse 7

अग्राह्यः शाश्वतः कृष्णो लोहिताक्षः प्रतर्दनः ।

प्रभूत स्त्रिककुद्धाम पवित्रं मङ्गळं परम् ॥ ७ ॥

agrāhyaḥ śāśvataḥ kṛṣṇō lōhitākṣaḥ pratardanaḥ |

prabhūta strikakuddhāma pavitraṃ maṅgaḻaṃ param || 7 ||

No sense can grasp Him. He is eternal, the abode of supreme bliss, His eyes red with joy, and He withdraws all things at the dissolution. His wealth remains full, His abode Paramapadam is beyond this universe, and He is purity itself, the supreme auspiciousness, which wards off every evil merely by being remembered.

Pada 4 · Verse 8

ईशानः प्राणदः प्राणो ज्येष्ठः श्रेष्ठः प्रजापतिः ।

हिरण्यगर्भो भूगर्भो माधवो मधुसूदनः ॥ ८ ॥

īśānaḥ prāṇadaḥ prāṇō jyēṣṭhaḥ śrēṣṭhaḥ prajāpatiḥ |

hiraṇyagarbhō bhūgarbhō mādhavō madhusūdanaḥ || 8 ||

He rules all creation and gives the nityasuris the strength to enjoy Him forever. He is the life of all beings, older than the oldest and the most praiseworthy, the Lord of the nityasuris. He dwells in a lovely abode, protected Bhoomi Devi as His own child, is the consort of Sri Mahalakshmi, and slew the demon Madhu.
