The Land at Mammiyūr

At last Guru and Vāyu came to the skies above the earth and began searching for a place where they might entrust the Lord to humankind. As they passed over Kerala, they heard a voice calling to them, asking them to hand the Lord over. Looking down, they saw Lord Shiva and Pārvatī Devī, who offered them land on which to install the Lord.

Even today, near Guruvāyūr, stands the Shiva kshethram of Mammiyūr, about a kilometre and a half away. Lord Shiva and Pārvatī Devī, having given land for the Lord at that distance from their own shrine, wished that they too might have the privilege of housing the Lord in their temple. It is said that the Lord fashioned another vigraham of Himself in Sri Vaikuṇṭham, a little taller, and placed it in their care. To this day, a visitor to Mammiyūr can see a taller vigraham of Guruvāyūrappan beside the sanctum of Lord Shiva and Pārvatī Devī.
