From Dvārakā to Guru and Vāyu

At the close of the Dvāpara Yuga, before He ascended to Paramapadam, Sri Krishna entrusted the vigraham to Uddhava, wishing it to be preserved for the ages to come. The vigraham is said to be made of a stone called Pātāla Anjanam, found only in Sri Vaikuṇṭham. Sri Krishna explained to Uddhava that the coming age would be the Kali Yuga, filled with adharmam. In such a time, He wished that there should be a presence that would answer the prayers of His devotees and protect them from every danger.

So He gave the vigraham to Uddhava and asked him to keep it safe, and to build a temple for it after the pralayam.

Soon Sri Krishna ascended to Paramapadam, and the pralayam swept over the world. As the great flood was about to engulf Uddhava, he raised his eyes to the sky and saw Brihaspati, the Guru of the Devas, and Vāyu Deva. He called them at once and entrusted the vigraham to them, together with the duty of establishing a temple for the Lord.

In the first age the Lord had been worshipped as Nārāyaṇa, in the second as Keshava, in the third as Mādhava, and in the Kali Yuga He is worshipped as Sri Krishna. Thus Āṇḍāl begins her Tiruppāvai with "Nārāyaṇanē namakkē paṛai tharuvān," and ends it with "Vangak kaḍal kaḍaindha Mādhavanai, Kēsavanai."

Uddhava asked Guru and Vāyu to hold the Lord in their care until the Kali Yuga reached a time when mountains had risen, rivers flowed, the oceans raged, and men built houses; and then to wait until they found a person who they believed would worship the Lord with reverence. When they found such a person, they were to hand the vigraham to him and establish a temple for the Lord.

Guru and Vāyu held the Lord in their hands, served Him in kainkaryam, and waited for the time when all of Uddhava's conditions would be fulfilled.
