Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Anubhavam · Appendix: Your Birth Star
Shravana (श्रवण)
Shravana covers verses 85 to 88 of the stotram, one for each of its four padas.
Pada 1 · Verse 85
उद्भवः सुन्दरः सुन्दो रत्ननाभः सुलोचनः ।
अर्को वाजसनिः शृङ्गी जयन्तः सर्वविज्जयी ॥ ८५ ॥
udbhavaḥ sundaraḥ sundō ratnanābhaḥ sulōcanaḥ |
arkō vājasaniḥ śṛṅgī jayantaḥ sarvavijjayī || 85 ||
Continuing the Buddha form, He seemed to rise above samsara by His own path, and appeared beautiful in the asuras' eyes, melting their hearts. His gem-like navel and charming eyes drew them to Him, and they praised and worshipped Him. He gave them a taste for the pleasures of this world, carried peacock feathers as a sign of non-violence, and won over even their most learned.
Pada 2 · Verse 86
सुवर्णबिन्दुरक्षोभ्यः सर्ववागीश्वरेश्वरः ।
महाह्रदो महागर्तो महाभूतो महानिधिः ॥ ८६ ॥
suvarṇabindurakṣōbhyaḥ sarvavāgīśvarēśvaraḥ |
mahāhṛdō mahāgartō mahābhūtō mahānidhiḥ || 86 ||
With sweet words, He kept the truth of the Vedic path from those who misused it, and could not be shaken in argument, winning against all their masters of speech. He is a deep lake: the evil sink in Him, while the good bathe in Him again and again. He casts those who follow false knowledge into the pits of samsara, and holds great souls as His own, His treasure.
Pada 3 · Verse 87
कुमुदः कुन्दरः कुन्दः पर्जन्यः पवनोऽनिलः ।
अमृताशोऽमृतवपुः सर्वज्ञः सर्वतोमुखः ॥ ८७ ॥
kumudaḥ kundaraḥ kundaḥ parjanyaḥ pavanō’nilaḥ |
amṛtāśō’mṛtavapuḥ sarvajñaḥ sarvatōmukhaḥ || 87 ||
He rejoices on earth in His devotees' company and gives them the pure knowledge of the Supreme, step by step, until it becomes the highest devotion. Like a rain cloud, He removes their three kinds of suffering, goes to them Himself unasked, and feeds them the nectar of His qualities and His nectar-like form. He knows what each one needs, and can be reached by many paths.
Pada 4 · Verse 88
सुलभः सुव्रतः सिद्धः शत्रुजिच्छत्रुतापनः ।
न्यग्रोधोदुम्बरोऽश्वत्थः चाणूरान्ध्रनिषूदनः ॥ ८८ ॥
sulabhaḥ suvrataḥ siddhaḥ śatrujicchatrutāpanaḥ |
nyagrōdhōdumbarō’śvatthaḥ cāṇūrāndhraniṣūdanaḥ || 88 ||
He is easy to attain and has vowed to protect all who surrender to Him, His protection always within their reach. He conquers their enemies through others. Though He has the Supreme Abode with Lakshmi, He is at the command of those who come to Him with folded hands. He appoints the devas to their passing posts, and He slew the wrestler Chanura.
