Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Anubhavam · Appendix: Your Birth Star

Purva Ashadha (पूर्वाषाढा)

Purva Ashadha covers verses 77 to 80 of the stotram, one for each of its four padas.

Pada 1 · Verse 77

विश्वमूर्तिर्महामूर्तिः दीप्तमूर्तिरमूर्तिमान् ।

अनेकमूर्तिरव्यक्तः शतमूर्तिः शताननः ॥ ७७ ॥

viśvamūrtirmahāmūrtiḥ dīptamūrtiramūrtimān |

anēkamūrtiravyaktaḥ śatamūrtiḥ śatānanaḥ || 77 ||

The whole universe is His body, and everything rests in His immense form. All that shines takes its light from Him. He owns even things without a fixed form, takes many forms at will, and does not reveal His true nature to all in His human births. He shows a hundred forms within one, as in His cosmic form, with countless faces.

Pada 2 · Verse 78

एको नैकः सवः कः किं यत्तत्पदमनुत्तमम् ।

लोकबन्धुर्लोकनाथो माधवो भक्तवत्सलः ॥ ७८ ॥

ēkō naikaḥ savaḥ kaḥ kiṃ yattatpadamanuttamam |

lōkabandhurlōkanāthō mādhavō bhaktavatsalaḥ || 78 ||

He is unique, yet not alone, for all things are His. He removes ignorance of Himself, dwells within all as their controller, and stays pure in all. He is the one to be sought, strives to protect His devotees, increases their devotion, and is their unsurpassed goal. He is the true kinsman and natural master of all, the consort of Mahalakshmi, and loves His devotees as a cow loves its calf.

Pada 3 · Verse 79

सुवर्णवर्णो हेमाङ्गो वराङ्गश्चन्दनाङ्गदी ।

वीरहा विषमः शून्यो घृताशीरचलश्चलः ॥ ७९ ॥

suvarṇavarṇō hēmāṅgō varāṅgaścandanāṅgadī |

vīrahā viṣamaḥ śūnyō ghṛtāśīracalaścalaḥ || 79 ||

His divine body shines like gold. He showed Devaki His divine form, and ornaments become beautiful only by touching Him. As a child, He destroyed Putana and Sakatasura. He treats the good and the wicked differently. Born among us, He is free from every defect, and He fills the world with good like ghee. Evil men could not move Him, yet He would set aside His own word for His devotees.

Pada 4 · Verse 80

अमानी मानदो मान्यो लोकस्वामी त्रिलोकधृत् ।

सुमेधा मेधजो धन्यः सत्यमेधा धराधरः ॥ ८० ॥

amānī mānadō mānyō lōkasvāmī trilōkadhṛt |

sumēdhā mēdhajō dhanyaḥ satyamēdhā dharādharaḥ || 80 ||

He has no pride, honours His devotees, and is worthy of respect for His love for them. His simplicity makes Him the master of the world, and He bears the universe. His mind always thinks of His worshippers' good. Born from Devaki's austerities, He felt blessed to be her son. His thoughts and words are always sincere, and He held up the Govardhana mountain.
