Mrigasira (मृगशीर्ष)

Mrigasira covers verses 17 to 20 of the stotram, one for each of its four padas.

Pada 1 · Verse 17

उपेन्द्रो वामनः प्रांशुः अमोघः शुचिरूर्जितः ।

अतीन्द्रस्सङ्ग्रहस्सर्गो धृतात्मा नियमो यमः ॥ १७ ॥

upēndrō vāmanaḥ prāṃśuḥ amōghaḥ śucirūrjitaḥ |

atīndrassaṅgrahassargō dhṛtātmā niyamō yamaḥ || 17 ||

Born as Indra's younger brother, He came to Bali as Vamana and grew into Trivikrama, filling the three worlds. Nothing He does is in vain. He is pure, mighty, above Indra, and easily reached by His devotees. His feet blessed all the worlds. He serves those who surrender to Him, and controls all beings from within.

Pada 2 · Verse 18

वेद्यो वैद्यः सदायोगी वीरहा माधवो मधुः ।

अतीन्द्रियो महामायो महोत्साहो महाबलः ॥ १८ ॥

vēdyō vaidyaḥ sadāyōgī vīrahā mādhavō madhuḥ |

atīndriyō mahāmāyō mahōtsāhō mahābalaḥ || 18 ||

He is to be known, and He is the physician who cures the disease of rebirth, ever awake within His devotees. He destroys false arguments that keep people from Him, gives the knowledge of the Supreme, and is sweet as honey. Beyond the senses, He hides by His wonder from the undevoted, and creates with joy and boundless strength.

Pada 3 · Verse 19

महाबुद्धिर्महावीर्यो महाशक्तिर्महाद्युतिः ।

अनिर्देश्यवपुः श्रीमान् अमेयात्मा महाद्रिधृत् ॥ १९ ॥

mahābuddhirmahāvīryō mahāśaktirmahādyutiḥ |

anirdēśyavapuḥ śrīmān amēyātmā mahādridhṛt || 19 ||

He knows His devotees' needs everywhere and always, and remains unchanged through all change. His power transforms matter and needs no help. His form is beyond description, adorned with divine ornaments, and His nature is immeasurable. As the great tortoise, He bore the Mandara mountain during the churning of the ocean.

Pada 4 · Verse 20

महेष्वासो महीभर्ता श्रीनिवासस्सतां गतिः ।

अनिरुद्धः सुरानन्दो गोविन्दो गोविदां पतिः ॥ २० ॥

mahēṣvāsō mahībhartā śrīnivāsassatāṃ gatiḥ |

aniruddhaḥ surānandō gōvindō gōvidāṃ patiḥ || 20 ||

As Rama, He wielded the great bow and built the bridge to Lanka. As Varaha, He lifted the earth. He is the abode of Sri Mahalakshmi and the goal of the good, and no one can obstruct Him. As the swan (Hamsa), He gave joy to the devas, and He is Govinda, who answers every call for help.
