Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Anubhavam · Appendix: Your Birth Star
Hasta (हस्त)
Hasta covers verses 49 to 52 of the stotram, one for each of its four padas.
Pada 1 · Verse 49
सुव्रतः सुमुखस्सूक्ष्मः सुघोषः सुखदः सुहृत् ।
मनोहरो जितक्रोधो वीरबाहुर्विदारणः ॥ ४९ ॥
suvrataḥ sumukhassūkṣmaḥ sughōṣaḥ sukhadaḥ suhṛt |
manōharō jitakrōdhō vīrabāhurvidāraṇaḥ || 49 ||
As Nara-Narayana, His vows are for the good of others, and His face is pleasing even as He meditates. His nature is subtle and proclaimed by the Upanishads. He gives bliss to those who follow good conduct, wishes well even to those who never helped Him, and captivates every heart, free from anger. At the churning of the ocean, His thousand mighty arms churned, and He cut off Rahu's head.
Pada 2 · Verse 50
स्वापनस्स्ववशो व्यापी नैकात्मा नैककर्मकृत् ।
वत्सरो वत्सलो वत्सी रत्नगर्भो धनेश्वरः ॥ ५० ॥
svāpanassvavaśō vyāpī naikātmā naikakarmakṛt |
vatsarō vatsalō vatsī ratnagarbhō dhanēśvaraḥ || 50 ||
As Mohini, He lulled the asuras to sleep with Her smiles, then played with the devas as He wished. He gave His strength to all who churned, took many forms, and did many wonders. He lives in all beings to give each the right fruit. Full of affection for those who seek refuge, He tends the countless souls as His children, and quickly gives His devotees the wealth they seek.
Pada 3 · Verse 51
धर्मगुब्धर्मकृद्धर्मी सदक्षरमसत्क्षरम् ।
अविज्ञाता सहस्रांशुः विधाता कृतलक्षणः ॥ ५१ ॥
dharmagubdharmakṛddharmī sadakṣaramasatkṣaram |
avijñātā sahasrāṃśuḥ vidhātā kṛtalakṣaṇaḥ || 51 ||
He protects dharma, practises it without selfish motive, and acts through it. He is truly worthy, eternal and unfailing, but brings misfortune and endless samsara to those set on sin. Though He knows everything with a thousand rays of knowledge, He does not know the sins of His devotees and forgives them. Even Yama is under His control, and He has marked out those He will favour.
Pada 4 · Verse 52
गभस्तिनेमिस्सत्त्वस्थस्सिंहो भूतमहेश्वरः ।
आदिदेवो महादेवो देवेशो देवभृद्गुरुः ॥ ५२ ॥
gabhastinēmissattvasthassiṃhō bhūtamahēśvaraḥ |
ādidēvō mahādēvō dēvēśō dēvabhṛdguruḥ || 52 ||
He holds the radiant thousand-spoked discus, the saviour of all who bear His marks. He dwells in His devotees' hearts, so Yama cannot touch them, and like a lion He punishes those who harm them. He is the Supreme Lord of all beings and of their lords, the first cause of the devas, playing with them as toys. He supports them and teaches them their duties through the Vedas.
