Garuḍa, the Embodiment of the Vedas
Garuḍa is not merely the vehicle of Sriman Nārāyaṇa; he is the very embodiment of the Vedas. The Vedas are divided into two great sections, the karma kāṇḍam and the jñāna kāṇḍam. The karma kāṇḍam deals with yajñas, the rituals and sacrifices that form the foundation of Vedic practice, and teaches dharma, duty and discipline. The jñāna kāṇḍam, the Vedānta, is the essence of divine wisdom, concerned with the Paramātma and the realisation of the Supreme Truth.
In his eternal service to the Lord, Garuḍa embodies the passage from karma to jñāna. The Garuḍa Sevai, in which the Lord is borne upon Garuḍa's shoulders, is the karma kāṇḍam leading the devotee towards the jñāna kāṇḍam. Just as Vedic ritual leads the seeker towards deeper understanding and, at last, to moksham, Garuḍa's flight is not a mere movement through space but a spiritual journey that lifts the devotee from worldly action towards the realisation of the divine.
In this way Garuḍa is not only a vāhanam but a Vedānta dhvaja, a banner of the supreme knowledge. His very form is made of the Vedas. His wings are the Brāhmaṇas and Āraṇyakas, the guiding limbs of Vedic learning. His eyes are the Gāyatrī mantram, lighting the path of wisdom. His limbs are the shākhās of the Vedas, and his tail is vyākaraṇa, the grammar that upholds the sacred texts. Above all, Garuḍa bears the Lord upon his shoulders, just as the Vedas bear Vedānta as their crown.
The highest realisation of the Vedas is the knowledge of the Paramātma, and Garuḍa, in bearing the Lord, shows the final purpose of all knowledge: complete surrender to the Supreme.
The Garuḍa Sevai, then, is not merely a procession, but a profound picture of the soul's journey from karma to jñāna, from action to realisation, from devotion to liberation. Just as Vedic knowledge culminates in Vedānta, Garuḍa's service reaches its summit in bearing the Lord Himself. This is what makes Garuḍa not only a vāhanam but the very breath of the Vedas, a timeless guide leading the way to the embrace of the Paramātma.
Jaya Garuḍa Suparṇa!
