A Brief Insight to Visishtadvaita Philosophy
The need for an Āchārya in one's spiritual life
One who desires moksham must seek out an Āchārya. When one seeks out an Āchārya and surrenders at their feet, any sin will not pose any hindrance to moksham. Without an Āchārya, regardless of how many good deeds we may commit in our lifetime, we will not be eligible for moksham.
Here are a few anecdotes that elucidate the role of an Āchārya in our lives.
Vishṇu Dharmam tells the story of Kshethrabandhu, who retorted to evil ways but was reformed by a sage. The sage was pleased by Kshethrabandhu's attention span and advised him to chant the name of Govinda, and that one day, the Lord would show him the path of righteousness, reforming him. Kshethrabandhu followed the sage's advice and gained Paramapadam.
Padmottara Purāṇam tells the story of Pundarika, who relentlessly practiced bhakti-yoga but could not get a glimpse of the Lord and hence became dejected. One day, Pundarika encountered Devarishi Nārada and explained to him what plight he was facing. Devarishi Nārada told Pundarika not to worry and gave him the Ashtaakshara Mantram, instructing him to chant and meditate upon it. Pundarika earnestly followed Devarishi Nārada's advice and attained Paramapadam.
