Sri Vishnu Sahasranaama Anubhavam · The Thousand Names

Naama 847-850: The Lord who is superior to all three kinds of souls

847. svadhṛtaḥ · स्वधृतः

The one who is superior to the bound souls (baddhas), who may obtain some of these eight powers through meditation and prayer. His sovereignty does not depend on anything else; it is innate and natural to Him.

In the Visishtadvaita tradition, the jeevaathmas are of three kinds: the bound souls (baddhas), who are still in samsara; the released souls (muktas), who have attained Paramapadam; and the eternally free souls (nityas or nityasuris), who were never bound. The next four naamas show the Lord's supremacy over all three, and His care for all of them.

848. svāsyaḥ · स्वास्यः

The one whose glorious status is superior even to that of the released souls (muktas).

(oṃ) svāsyāya namaḥ

In Sri Vaikuntham, the released souls attain a status similar to that of the Lord in many respects. Yet His status is superior, because it was never subject to ignorance at any time, unlike theirs.

849. prāgvaṃśaḥ · प्राग्वंशः

The one who is the eternal support even of the foremost souls, the nityasuris, who have been in Sri Vaikuntham from the very beginning.

Sri Bhattar quotes the Purusha Suktam: "That place where the ancient sādhyas, the devas, dwell" (yatra pūrvē sādhyāḥ santi dēvāḥ). The nityasuris, such as Adisesha, Garuda, and Vishvaksena, have been serving the Lord from time immemorial.

850. vaṃśavardhanaḥ · वंशवर्धनः

The one who fosters and makes grow all three families of souls, the bound, the released, and the eternal.
