Pey Āzhwār

According to tradition, Pey Āzhwār was found in a lily in the pond of the Ādi Keshava Perumāl temple in Mylāpūr. In Tamizh, "pey" refers to one who is possessed, and the saint was given this name because he was so utterly, so madly, drawn to the Lord.

The Sri Ādi Keshava Perumāl temple, among the best known temples of Mylāpūr, has a small pond where flowers of many kinds bloom. There, in the year Siddhārthi, in the month of Aippasi, on Dashami, a Thursday, under the Sadhayam nakshatram, Pey Āzhwār was born as a small child in an alli flower, around the seventh century, as an amsham of the Nandakam, the sword of Sriman Nārāyaṇa.
