The legend tells the story of a brahmin named Vedavit. Vedavit is said to have been looking for the best place to perform dhyanam and tapas, and he is said to have come to this kshethram. When he performed tapas at this kshethram, the Lord is said to have appeared as Vijayaasana Perumāl and performed the ashtaakshara mantra padhesham. Another story tells the tale of Romasa Maharshi and his student Satyavan, who came to this kshethram.
It is said that they arrived along the banks of the Tāmraparaṇi river and saw a fisherman dropping his net into the water on the opposite bank. As the fisherman dropped his net into the water, a snake is said to have bitten him, and he passed away on the spot. Satyavan is said to have seen a Swarna-vahanam ( a golden chariot) appear and take the aathma to Vaikuṇṭham. Satyavan is said to have asked his guru why the man was taken to Vaikuṇṭham.
Romasa Maharshi is then supposed to have told Satyavan that it's the power of the kshethram that, regardless of what the person was doing when he passed away on this pure land, he achieved moksham.
