Sthala Puranam

Legend has it that the Lord Brahmā and Vālmīki worshipped the Lord at this kshethram. Another story tells the episode of Mandooka Maharshi. Mandooka Maharshi earned his name as he would perform penance in cold water, holding his breath for extended periods. Once, when he was in deep penance, Maharshi Durvāsa visited the water body. When Mandooka Maharshi did not notice his presence, Maharshi Durvāsa cursed Mandooka Maharshi that he would take the form of a toad.

Upon worshipping the Lord at this kshethram, the curse was said to be broken, and he regained his human form. Hence, the pushkariṇī at this kshethram is named Mandooka-Pushkariṇī.
