Legend has it that a Deva-Asura Yudham once took place, and Lord Vishṇu sided with the Devas, while Lord Shiva was said to have sided with the Asuras. When the battle raged in the dark, Lord Shiva is said to have hurled his Trishūlam at Lord Vishṇu, who responded by stopping the Trishūlam with his Sudarshana Chakram. The Lord then showed Lord Shiva that He, Himself, was Lord Brahmā, Vishṇu, and Shiva. This is said to have humbled Lord Shiva.
Special Note
During the Kṛta Yugam, the rakshasas Madhu and Kaiṭabha stole the Vedas from Lord Brahmā, and the Lord took the Matsya Avataram to recover them. The Lord then took the form of Hayagrivar and became the Lord of knowledge. Shrīmān Vedānta Deshikan performed tapas here at Aushadagiri(the divine hill that was brought by Hanumān, containing the divine Sanjeevini), which is adjacent to the temple. Garuḍan is said to have been impressed by his tapas and appeared before Vedānta Deshikan.
Garuḍan then initiated the Hayagrīva Stotram(see the picture above). Vedānta Deshikan is then said to have meditated upon Lord Hayagrīva by chanting the stotram. Lord Hayagrīva then presented Vedānta Deshikan with an idol of Himself, which is said to have been passed down through the lineage of various aradhakas, such as Devī Sarasvatī and Bhagavad Rāmānuja, and is currently worshipped at the Parakala Muttam situated in Mysore.
One who chants this stotram will attain proper knowledge of education, good concentration in studies, fluency in speech, mastery in debates, vocabulary, and will have outstanding memory power. The idol of Lakshmī Hayagrīva that was handed to Svāmi Deshikan
