Sthala Puranam

The town of Mathura has been mentioned in all the previous yugams. It is said in Kṛta Yugam that Lord Vāmana's Sidhaashramam was present here. In the Treta Yugam, it is said that Shatrugna beat Lavanasuran and made Mathura his capital for twelve years. In Dvāpara Yugam, Lord Sri Krishna was born here in this kshethram. Although the Lord was born here, the Divyadesam is located in Vrindavan, which is 10 km from Mathura. Mathura is said to be the center of Vraja Bhūmi.

Vraja Bhūmi refers to an area of 184 km, which Lord Sri Krishna is said to have roamed with His bare feet. The temple from Āzhwār pāsurams does not stand today but there is a South-Indian style Rangji Mandir in Vrindavan that is very popular.
