Shrine Location
Sthala Puranam
It is said that Lord Rāma was responsible for establishing this temple at this kshethram. After defeating Rāvaṇa, Lord Rāma was faced with Brahmanhatyadosham, as he had killed Rāvaṇa, who was born a Brāhmiṇ. To engage in pariharam for the dosha, the Lord was seeking solutions. It was then that Dridanetramuni suggested to the Lord that he make an idol of a cow out of pure gold, large enough for the Lord to remain seated within it.
Dridanetramuni then asked the Lord to remain seated within the gold edifice for four days, following which he requested that the Lord engage in charitable activities. The Lord did as he was instructed. After the four days had passed, Lord Rāma donated the gold idol to Dridanetramuni. When Dridanetramuni returned to his ashram near Sīrkāzhi, he sold the gold statue to raise money for the temple's construction. Hence, the temple is called Semponsei (Sempon-gold, Sei-made of) Kovil.
