Sthala Puranam
During the Rāmāyaṇa period, when Rāvaṇa abducted Devī Sītā and started to fly away in the Pushpaka Vimānam, a vulture by the name of Jaṭāyu stood in his way and put up a valiant battle against Rāvaṇa until Rāvaṇa cut off Jaṭāyu's wings, causing him to fall in the Panchavati forest. Jaṭāyu held on to his life till he could see Lord Rāma and tell him what had transpired so far. After relaying the information of Devī Sītā's kidnapping to Lord Rāma, Jaṭāyu lost his life.
Lord Rāma is then supposed to have cremated Jaṭāyu, offering him salvation(moksham). The Lord here is holding Jaṭāyu on His lap to cremate him.
Special Note
A peculiarity of this kshethram is that Shrīdevī Thāyār and Bhūdevi Thāyār have interchanged places, i.e., Bhūdevi Thāyār is on the right, and Shrīdevī Thāyār is on the left. When one sees Shrīdevī Thāyār here, one can observe that she is standing about two feet behind the Lord, as She was unable to handle the heat of the pyre.
On new moon day (Amāvāsyā), pilgrims congregate here at this kshethram to perform tharpanam(rites to the departed souls). In this temple, barren women receive the prasadam, which consists of roasted lentils soaked in water. While taken home, it is believed that if the lentils sprout, they will beget children.
