Legend has it that Ādi Jagannatha Perumāl is said to have been present at this kshetram even before Dasharatha came with Kaikeyi to conquer South India. It is noted that Dasharatha performed tapas to this Lord to have children.
Legend tells that Lord Rāma reached the seashore where Vibhīshaṇa performed sharanagathi. As the army contemplated how to cross the ocean, Vibhīshaṇa advised Lord Rāma to pray to Samudraraja by performing praayopavesham (fast for three days and nights) to allow their passage over his waters to reach Lanka. Thus, Lord Rāma is said to have sat in Padmasanam on a bed made of darbha grass with the Anjali mudra for three days. When Samudraraja did not show himself, in a rage, Lord Rāma told Lakshmaṇa to hand Him His bow and an arrow.
The Lord mounts the arrow and tells Samudraraja that He would make all the water in the ocean evaporate if he did not show himself. As the Lord was about to fire His deadly weapon, Samudraraja appears and falls at Lord Rāma's feet and tells the army that Nal and Neel were phenomenal architects and that they could build a bridge that would float on the oceanic waters, granting Lord Rāma and His army passage over the ocean to Shri Lanka. As Lord Rāma sat on a bed made of darbha, this kshethram is called Pullaranya Kshethram.
Special Note
The water at this kshethram is considered very holy, as it was the starting point of the Ramasethu. Thus, taking a bath here or sethu-snanam is considered to absolve all sins. Along with sethu-snanam, performing tarpanam here at this kshetram is considered highly auspicious.
