Sthala Puranam

As Bhīma had also participated in deceiving Dronacharya during the Mahābhārata, he had also incurred some amount of sin. To gain atonement for those sins, it is said that Bhīma performed tapas here. Thus, the Lord appeared before him and blessed him, granting him atonement for his sins of killing his guru and a hundred brothers. The legend has it that the Saptarshis worshipped the Lord, proclaiming that He is the Paratatvam, and the Lord took the name Mayapiran at this kshethram.

One can see this iconic mace outside the temple, showing that Bhīma established it.
