Sthala Puranam
During the Rāmāyaṇa period, when Rāvaṇa abducted Devī Sītā and started to fly away in the Pushpaka Vimānam, a vulture by the name of Jaṭāyu stood in his way and put up a valiant battle against Rāvaṇa until Rāvaṇa cut off Jaṭāyu's wings, causing him to fall in the Panchavati forest. Jaṭāyu held on to his life till he could see Lord Rāma and tell him what had transpired so far. After relaying the information of Devī Sītā's kidnapping to Lord Rāma, Jaṭāyu lost his life.
Lord Rāma is then supposed to have cremated Jaṭāyu, offering him salvation(moksham). The Lord here is assuming a sleeping posture after performing the final rites for Jaṭāyu. The Lord shows this entire scene to Tirumangai Āzhwār.
