Shrine Location
Sthala Puranam
The legend states that this temple was established by Arjuna during his trip to South India, when he was in vanavaasam with the Pāṇḍavas. It is said that when Arjuna reached this kshethram, he was extremely thirsty and went in search of water. When he could find no water, he found Agastya Maharshi performing tapas. Arjuna paid his respects to the Maharshi and asked him if he had any water. Agastya Maharshi said all the water he could offer was that which was there in his kamandalam.
After Arjuna drank the water, he asked the sage if he could direct him to a source of water, as he was still thirsty. Agastya Maharshi said there was no water in the area and told Arjuna to seek the help of Lord Krishna, as he always did. Arjuna then performs tapas to call Lord Krishna to this kshethram. When Lord Krishna arrived, he gave Arjuna a sword and asked Arjuna to dig the earth. When Arjuna dug the earth, a stream of water emerged, granting water to the area.
This water source came to be known as Khaḍga Tīrtham( the water that came from the sword).
Special Note
Here, one can see Lord Pārthasārathy with four hands, as supposed to see him with two hands like at Tiruvallikeni(Chennai). Another specialty of this kshethram is that one can see the utsava moorthigal of both Lord Rāma and Lord Krishna standing in the same garbha-graham. We can see Kolavili Rāmar holding the shankam, chakram, bow, and arrow.
