Legend says the story of Bharadwaja Maharshi, who fell in love with a Gandharva Kanya. The union had children who became the heirs of the Pallava Dynasty, named Pallava and Villava. The Vimānam in this temple has three tiers. In the first tier, the Lord gives darshanam in the sitting posture. In the middle tier, He is depicted as Ranganatha in the reclining posture, accompanied by Sri Devī and Bhūdevi. In the top tier, He is shown in a standing posture.
