The legend has it that Varuṇa and Samudraraja worshipped Lord Vishṇu at this kshethram. It is also believed that the Lord visiting this kshethram, followed by Lakshmī, made it His home, and hence the name Triu Ninravoor. It is said that Tirumangai Āzhwār, after worshipping at this shrine, left without singing a pāsuram. The Lord followed him to Māmallapuram, where he sang the pāsuram, referring to this kshethram.
