Shiva tested Parvathi's commitment to performing tapas by setting fire to the mango tree under which she was seated. Parvathi prayed to her brother, Lord Vishṇu, who caused waves of nectar to cool down the scorching rays. Lord Vishṇu, as Vāmana, continues to reside at this kshethram at the request of Pārvatī. It is also believed that at the request of Lord Vishṇu, the moon-adorned Shiva alleviated the discomfort caused by the heat that emanated during the churning of the milky ocean. Hence the name, Nilaatingal Tundattan.
