According to legend, Nandi had once visited Vaikuṇṭham to see the Lord, but the Dwarapalakas Jaya and Vijaya refused entry to Vaikuṇṭham. In a rage, Nandi insulted Jaya and Vijaya. Thus, Jaya and Vijaya cursed Nandi that he would experience excruciating heat and would perspire intensely. Jaya and Vijaya then felt sorry for cursing Nandi and suggested that Nandi go to Kumbakoṇam and meditate upon the Lord. Taking their suggestion, Nandi proceeded to Kumbakoṇam and began meditating on the Lord.
Impressed with Nandi's tapas, the Lord appeared in front of Nandi and released Nandi from his curse.
