Tirukodittanam

King Rukmangathan of the Suryavamsam is said to have offered flowers to the Lord daily as a form of kainkaryam. One day, the Devas saw the flowers and thought they were to be worshipped first by those beautiful flowers, and hence started to steal the flowers, making garlands for themselves and adorning themselves with them. One day, the king performed a yagam to reveal who was stealing the flowers.

The king added numerous medicinal herbs to the divine flames of the yajña, which released a cloud of smoke that revealed the devas wearing floral garlands. The king told the devas that if they had asked for the flowers, he would have given them the flowers without any second thought. The king said to the devas that they could take the flowers at any time and asked them to return to Amarāvatī(Devalokam).

The devas informed the king that they were unable to return, as their powers had been rendered useless by the divine smoke emanating from the yajña. The devas told the king that the only way they could return to Amarāvatī was if someone in the kingdom who was observing Ekādashī-vratham with a staunch following, without deviating from any of the rules, gave away the punyam that they gained by following the vratham.

The king went searching throughout his kingdom and found a woman who was the only one in the entire kingdom who was religiously following the norms of the vratham.

The king explained the situation to her, and she gifted away all her punyam to the Devas, enabling them to reach Devalokam.
