Tirukkozhi - Urayur

There was once a Chozha king by the name Dharmavarman who lived in Kumbakoṇam. Once, when the king had gone on a hunting trip, he found that a few rishis were distressed by the attack of demons and sought the king's help to kill them. The king bravely defended the rishis and stayed in the forest for some time to look after the welfare of the rishis. At this time, the king was saddened by his inability to father any children. The rishis then performed a yajna to help the king in his time of difficulty.

As the rishis were performing the yajna, a voice boomed from the sky, stating that if the king wanted children, he must pray to Goddess Lakshmī. Thus, the king prayed to Goddess Lakshmī. One day, as he was going through the forest, he noticed a very peculiar lotus blooming in a pond. Upon further inspection, he saw that the lotus had a thousand petals, and in the center, a beautiful baby girl was nestled. Goddess Lakshmī had answered the king's prayers by reincarnating herself as the baby girl.

As she was found in a lotus, Dharmavarman named the child Kamalavalli.

Here, the meaning of Kamala can be interpreted as Ka meaning Paramathma, Ma meaning the Jeevathma, and La meaning the one who helps reach. Therefore, Kamala means she who leads the Jeevathma to the Paramathma to attain moksham. Soon, a time came when Dharmavarman began to seek a suitor for Kamalavalli. Among the men in the swayamwaram, Lord Raṅganāthar of Sri Raṅgam was present. Seeing the Lord, Kamalavalli immediately garlanded the Lord. The Lord then left a form of Himself in the form of Sri Azhagiya Māṇavāḷan there in his stead.

Thus, all the people gathered at the event witnessed the grand spectacle of the wedding of the Lord with Goddess Lakshmī.

During the Pankuni Brahmotsavam in Sri Raṅgam, on the sixth day, the Lord travels to Urayur to marry Sri Lakshmī. Thus, between the two kshethrams, there is only one utsava moorthy. This kshethram does not conduct Brahmotsavam on its own.
