It is said that Ambarīsha was such an ardent devotee that the Sudarshana Chakra had made himself self-obligated to rush for Ambarīsha's protection. One day, the great sage Durvāsa decided to pay a visit to Ambarīsha. Ambarīsha had undertaken the Dvādashī-Vratam, in which one must break the fast after Ekadashi and feed their people at the start of Dvādashī. Durvāsa Maharshi told Ambarīsha that he would take a bath and then join him in the Dvādashī-Vratam. Ambarīsha agreed to wait for Durvāsa Maharshi.

Hours went by, but Durvāsa Maharshi was nowhere to be seen. On the advice of Sage Vasishta, Ambarīsha broke his fast by taking holy water. At this moment, Durvāsa Maharshi arrived and, in his temper, threw a lock of his hair to the ground. This hair grew into a monstrous demon that chased Ambarīsha to devour him. At this moment, the Sudarshana Chakra of the Lord came to Ambarīsha's rescue and cut the demon into tiny pieces. Further, the Chakra started to chase after Durvāsa Maharshi.

Durvāsa Maharshi began to run and sought refuge with Lord Brahmā, Lord Shiva, and ultimately at the heavenly abode of Lord Vishṇu himself. Still, the Chakra continued to pursue Durvāsa Maharshi. Lord Vishṇu instructed Durvāsa Maharshi to go and fall at Ambarīsha's feet and ask for his forgiveness. Durvāsa Maharshi then falls at Ambarīsha's feet for his forgiveness. Ambarīsha forgives Durvāsa Maharshi, and the Sudarshana Chakra stops going after Durvāsa Maharshi. It is said that

Ambarīsha used to pray to this Lord, and with this Lord's grace, he was protected.
