Legend tells the story of Kubera losing all his wealth because he had inappropriately seen Devī Pārvatī. When he asked for Her forgiveness, Devī Pārvatī asked him to go to Tirukkolur and perform tapas towards Lord Vishṇu, and he would regain his wealth. Thus, Kubera is said to have come to this kshethram, and after performing tapas, the Lord appeared as Vaithamanidi Perumāl, who brought all of Kubera's wealth. The Lord is said to have kept Kubera's wealth under Ādishesha and slept over it.
Thus, Kubera received their kripa-kataksham in the form of keeping his wealth safe and also gaining interest over time. The Lord's left-hand houses kajal. The Lord is said to be looking at this hand to find more wealth for Kubera's treasury.
Another story tells the tale of pralaya-kalam. Dharma is said to have taken a human form and prostrated at the Lord's feet to fight against adharma. The Lord is said to establish dharma by defeating all factors causing adharma at the time.
