Shrine Location
Sthala Puranam
According to legend, it is said that during the Kṛta Yugam, two demons by the name Madhu and Kaiṭabha stole the Vedas from Lord Brahmā and disappeared into the Pralaya Samudram (Ocean of Deluge). It is said that Lord Maha Vishṇu took the Matsya Avataram and retrieved the Vedas. It is also said that the Vedas had lost their fragrance as they were robbed. The Lord is then said to have taken the form of Parimala Ranganathan, restoring their fragrance and returning them to Lord Brahmā.
It is said that Gaṅgā Devī is present near the head of the Lord. As seen at Tirucherai, Kāvēri Devī was deemed greater than Gaṅgā Devī. Hence, it is said that Gaṅgā comes to this kshethram and bathes here in the Kāvēri river to rid herself of her sins.
Special Note
A peculiarity seen here with Lord is that he is seen in the Veera Shayanam. Anywhere one goes and sees the Lord in Shayana Kolam, one can see that the Lord will not be holding His shankam and chakram. However, here at this kshethram, as He carries His weapons and is in a reclined posture, He is said to be in the Veera Shayanam.
