And this Naimisharanyam is viewed as a holy forest. This Naimisaranya kshethram is said to be regarded as Tapovanam. There are nine tapovams. They are Daṇḍakāraṇyam, Saindhavāraṇyam, Jambhukāraṇyam, Pushkarāraṇyam, Utpalāraṇyam, Badrikāraṇyam, Gurujāṅgalāraṇyam, Aruputhāraṇyam and Naimisaranayam. It is believed that the perumāl is found in the form of a forest, and this Naimisharanyam is regarded as the holiest forest. The Emperumaan of this sthalam is giving his seva as the entire form of the Vanam (forest).
In their old age, all the Maharshis, along with Sownakar, went towards Lord Brahmā and asked him which is the best place suited for doing Yajña and tapas. As the answer, Lord Brahmā took a dharbai grass and made it into a wheel shape, and rolled the dharbai grass. Lord Brahmā said that after he rolls the grass, the place where it stops is considered the ideal location for performing tapas and yagam. He rolled the wheel, and it stopped at a particular place on Earth. That place is said to be Naimisharanyam.
Nemi means a wheel, and Naimisham means the place where the wheel landed. Aaranyam means forest. Since Nemi, the Chakkaram that landed in Aaranya's forest, the sthalam is called Naimisharanyam. This Naimishāraṇyam is said to be the place where most of the rishis performed sacrifices, tapas, and meditation, and explained the meaning of the old Puranas and Vedas. The Lord gives his seva in the form of Nature.
The Lord here gives his seva with the name as Sri Devaraja Perumāl along with Sri Hari Lakshmī and gives his audience (prathyaksham) to Devendran, Sudharma, Devarishis, Soodhapuranika, and Vedavyāsa.
Chakra Tīrtham
It is said that taking a bath in the Chakra Tīrtham absolves all sins. Gayāsura did tapas in this sthalam. Shrīmān Nārāyaṇan gave His audience to him as his tapas fulfilled him. The Lord asked him what boon he wanted as a result of complete tapas. But Gayasooran answered the Almighty that he didn't want any boon from him, as he was already so powerful. He asked that anyone who met him should be entitled to get moksham. The Lord did not want immoral souls to attain moksham just by meeting him.
The Lord said that the boon that Gayāsura was asking for could not be fulfilled in the way he was asking. Gayāsura then asked the Lord to present the souls for whom shraadham is performed upon his body to be given moksham. The Lord then said that this would be possible. Thus, Gayāsura grew to an enormous size, and the Lord sent his chakram to kill the asura, and his body was cut into three parts. The three parts are Siro Gayā (the head part), Nabhi Gayā (the middle part), and Charana Gayā (the foot part).
This sthalam, the Naimishāraṇyam, is said to be the Nabhi Gayā. The Gayā kshethram is said to be the Charana Gayā, and Badri is said to be Siro Gayā. Offering shraadham to departed souls in all these three sthalams is said to grant moksham to them.
